The Teacher of the Year Program
Since 1964, Virginia has participated in the National Teacher of the Year Program. The program, sponsored nationally by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and Scholastic Inc., honors teachers who represent the best in teaching across the nation.
In Virginia, the State Teacher of the Year Program is coordinated by the Virginia Department of Education. The program allows students, teachers, parents, administrators, and communities to collaborate in recognizing and honoring teachers who have excelled in their profession, while simultaneously remaining active in their communities and continuing their professional and personal development. District Teacher of the Year programs focuses positive public attention on education and the teaching profession.
In Portsmouth, each teacher being honored in the Teacher of the Year Program is an exceptional teacher who has been selected by his or her colleagues on the basis of teaching effectiveness, school and community involvement, and efforts toward professional growth and development. Each has a deep commitment to educating and nurturing the children enrolled in Portsmouth Public Schools.
The Portsmouth Teacher of the Year will represent Portsmouth Public Schools in the regional Teacher of the Year competition. He or she will serve as an ambassador for education and for Portsmouth, bringing positive attention to our education story.
